About Westwood

  • Location: One of the most coveted neighborhoods in the master-planned community of Rancho Bernardo, Westwood lies north of Rancho Bernardo Road along the western edge of I-15.

  • History: The area now known as Rancho Bernardo was the home of the Kumeyaay Native Americans before the arrival of Spanish soldiers and Franciscan missionaries in 1769, which set the gears of colonization into motion.

In 1821, the area fell under the Mexican government, which gave away large parcels of land to those who agreed to settle and nurture them. One of these land grants was a 17,763-acre plot called Rancho San Bernardo that was entrusted to English sea captain Jose Francisco de Sales Snook.

The property was sold to James McCoy in 1867 after Snook’s passing, and was subdivided in 1872. The area’s population started growing with the arrival of rancher and farmer families, spurring the growth of businesses like a post office, general store, and blacksmith shop.

Ownership of Rancho San Bernardo changed hands a few more times over the next few decades until developers Harry Summers and W.R. Hawn worked to transform the ranch into present-day Rancho Bernardo in 1961. They envisioned a self-contained community with houses, schools, and recreation centers.

Westwood was one of the new sections added to the master-planned community. It was established in 1968.

  • What’s in Westwood? The Westwood Club is the main attraction and focal point of the Westwood community. This full-featured recreational center aims to create an elegant but relaxing setting for residents and their guests.

Opened in 1963, the Club maintains a 13-acre recreational facility, offering unparalleled rest and relaxation to members who want to entertain friends and family in an inviting setting.

  • Schools in Westwood: The Westwood neighborhood is under the jurisdiction of the Poway Unified School District, which includes the Westwood Elementary School located adjacent to the Westwood Club.
