About Rancho Bernardo

  • Location: Rancho Bernardo is one of San Diego’s northernmost communities, just south of Escondido, northwest of Poway, and only 25 minutes north of downtown San Diego. Rancho Bernardo has many beautiful neighborhoods such as the 55 plus community of Oaks North, the well established family community of Westwood, Bernardo Heights and many more.
  • Quick history: Rancho Bernardo sits on a part of the sprawling Rancho San Bernardo land grant awarded to Jose Francisco de Sales Snook, an Englishman and later Mexican citizen, in 1842. But 2,700 years before the Spanish settlers, the area of Rancho Bernardo was the home of Kumeyaay Indians.

After the death of Snook, the land was divided into smaller ranches and passed onto different hands. In 1943, Donald and Lawrence Daley received the land from their deceased uncle. In 1961, they partnered with W.R. Fitz and Harry Summers, and so the Rancho Bernardo we know today began.
